Why We Built the BERS Program
Ontoly was founded in 2024 by Ashley Sarauer after years of working in both voluntary and compliance carbon markets — including drafting Verra's application to the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market. That experience revealed a stark imbalance: despite buildings representing 26% of global emissions, almost no carbon finance was reaching building owners. We built Ontoly to change that.
The existing system wasn't built for buildings. Projects faced heavy administrative burdens, relied on modeled estimates rather than real data, and grouped thousands of buildings into single mega-projects that lost critical detail. Carbon finance was flowing, but not to where it was needed most.
The BERS Program's credibility is grounded in the Founder's direct experience drafting carbon market regulations and submissions in the voluntary carbon market. All governance documents and processes are publicly available, and our submission for acceptance under the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles Assessment Framework can be reviewed on the Ontoly BERS Program page.
